A large bowl of potato salad was chilling in the refrigerator. Opal was my official taste tester, and she told me it was as good as her mom's, which I considered a great compliment. The days were still long, and the sun had only started to dip in the sky. The earlier wind had settled to a calm breeze as I left the house for my investigation.
"What a day. Actually, what a weekend," Frannie texted as I reached the west side of Chicory Trail.
I was about to write back but decided that kind of open-ended text required a phone call. I dialed Fran and was pleased when she picked up.
"So, you're not on the water," I said instead of the usual hello.
"No, I'm at the dock. The Coast Guard just dropped off the coroner and his team. They should be heading your way soon."
In the distance I spotted four people with a gurney and some equipment. This wasn't going to be the easiest body removal. "I see them. I guess Norwich is still down at the river." It was unlike him to spend so much time at a crime scene. He liked to leave the dirty work to everyone else. (I was part of that group.)
"No, I saw Norwich on the wharf gobbling an ice cream. If you're wondering if he eats ice cream around that darn toothpickâyes, yes, he does, and it's not a pleasant sight."
"There goes my surprise about him spending so much time at the crime scene. I wonder if he's even told the kite club about Theo's death."
"I assume so because he's apparently asked the club members to stay on the island." Frannie pulled the phone away temporarily. "If you're with the kite club, then I can't take you across until I get word from the detective." She returned to our call. "They are not happy, and now I have to be the grumpy gatekeeper in all of this."
"Well, at least Norwich did one thing right so far. It would be impossible to solve this if everyone left the island. It's a national club, so I assume people came here from all over the country. I'm sorry that you've got the unenviable position of reminding people they're stuck on the island."
"By the way, I think most of the kite club members are gathering down on the swim beach. They've decided to fly their kites as a tribute to their late president," Fran said.
"Oh, perfect, then all my suspects will be in one place. I'm heading that way now. Do you see Norwich anywhere in the vicinity? I want to avoid him."
"Gee, I can't imagine why," she teased. "Let me see." She stopped, and I heard her sniffing through the phone. "Don't smell him, so he's not nearby."
I laughed. "It seems we all have the exact same opinion of the man, and I have to say, for me, this encounter with him has to be the worst of all. I'll talk to you later, Fran."
I picked up my pace.
